Pool decking, if done right, can substantially increase the aesthetic look of your pool, increasing your enjoyment of sunny days spent around the pool. In this blog, we look at a variety of pool decking options.
It is more cost-effective and practical to have your pool and or pool and spa built first before your pool deck is constructed. It is possible to do it the other way around, but it is not ideal.
If you are reading this article, you are probably already considering decking options to go around your pool.
It is extremely important that the right materials are used for your pool project – materials that are durable, attractive, and not too hard on your pocket. The timber used for your pool deck needs to be properly prepared so as to avoid any peeling and blistering that could occur in the future. Pool decking boards should be treated and coated before they are laid otherwise, it is not possible to ensure that the boards are completely coated.
If you use the right materials and hire skilled pool decking builders, you should obtain a deck that you can be proud of, and most importantly, will last. When considering which materials should be used for your pool decking and the design of your deck, you need to keep the following in mind:-

While traditional timber decking is a popular choice for its natural warmth and flexibility, homeowners now have access to several low-maintenance alternatives that perform exceptionally well in the wet, chlorine-heavy environment of a pool surround. These options still deliver the raised, board-style structure that defines true “decking,” but they address common timber concerns such as regular oiling, splinters, and potential rot. Below, we explore three popular alternatives: composite, PVC/vinyl, and aluminium decking.
Note: at DeKing Decks we only install timber and composite decking.
Composite decking is a wood-plastic blend (often made from recycled wood fibres and plastic) engineered to look and feel remarkably like timber while offering far less upkeep. It resists rot, fading, mould, and splinters extremely well. Many composite boards feature a protective outer cap that enhances UV and stain resistance, and they come in a wide range of realistic wood-grain colours and textures.
Key advantages for pool areas include – excellent slip resistance when wet, no need for annual oiling or sealing, and a splinter-free surface that’s gentler on bare feet and safer for children. It drains effectively through the gaps like timber but won’t warp or cup as easily. While the upfront cost is typically higher than timber, the long-term savings in maintenance and its 25+ year lifespan often make it a smart investment for busy Queensland families.
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or vinyl decking is a fully synthetic, 100% plastic option that excels in high-moisture environments. Because it contains no wood fibres at all, it is completely waterproof and highly resistant to rot, mould, mildew, and swelling — even with frequent splashing or pool chemical contact.
This makes PVC particularly suitable for pool decks where water constantly sits on the surface. It is lightweight, easy to clean with just a hose, and offers good slip resistance in many textured finishes. Like composite, it requires virtually no ongoing maintenance, such as sanding or sealing.
Potential considerations include a more uniform, less “natural” appearance compared to timber or composite, and it can feel warmer underfoot in direct sun (though some modern PVC products are designed to mitigate heat retention).
Aluminium decking is a sleek, modern metal option that provides outstanding strength and longevity with almost zero maintenance. Powder-coated aluminium boards are corrosion-resistant, non-combustible, and completely immune to rot, warping, splintering, or termite damage — making them highly suitable for poolside use, coastal homes, or bushfire-prone areas.
Many aluminium systems achieve excellent slip ratings (often P4 or P5), which is crucial for wet pool surrounds, and the material stays structurally stable even in extreme heat or humidity. It is lightweight yet very strong, and the deck can be designed to be fully waterproof underneath in some systems.
While it has a contemporary rather than rustic look, the clean lines and durability appeal to those wanting a low-maintenance, long-lasting solution (often 40+ years). Initial cost is higher, but there is no need for sealing, oiling, or frequent inspections.
Every pool is different, and you need to ensure that you obtain the right pool deck design for the material you are using to ensure that it is functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Design challenges for pool decks can include sloping blocks and unusual pool shapes.

Pool Decking Warning
Many people think that by laying the decking boards upside down (ridged side up) they are creating a better non-slip surface. However, it is strongly recommended that you don’t fall into this trap. When a deck is constructed using boards upside down, it does in fact, become more slippery as algae grows in the water trapped between the grooves. This then becomes a safety hazard and also means that your deck can be susceptible to rot as the water cannot escape and the boards don’t dry out as quickly.
Yes, adding or modifying decking around an existing or new in-ground pool usually requires approval in Brisbane. A professional builder like DeKing Decks can manage the approvals process and ensure everything complies from the start.
Hardwood offers excellent durability and natural beauty in Queensland’s climate, while treated pine is often more budget-friendly and still performs well when properly detailed.
Yes, decking can be designed to wrap around or create a platform for above-ground pools, making them safer and more integrated with your backyard. Proper planning is needed to ensure stable support, correct heights for easy access, and good drainage to handle splash water effectively.
We had a need to refurbish an existing pool deck and fence around our elevated concrete pool. We obtained a number of quotes but Deking were the only company that provided an in depth analysis, combined with insights into local government building code and regulations. We ended up going with Deking with a full tear down and replacement option. The result was stunning and completely modernised this area of our home.
