Pool Decking Options, Advantages and Tips in Brisbane

October 7, 2014

Pool decking, if done right, can substantially increase the aesthetic look of your pool, increasing your enjoyment of sunny days spent around the pool. In this blog, we look at a variety of pool decking options.

It is more cost-effective and practical to have your pool and or pool and spa built first before your pool deck is constructed. It is possible to do it the other way around, but it is not ideal.

If you are reading this article, you are probably already considering decking options to go around your pool.

What are my Pool Decking Options?

  1. Timber/wooden decking – The classic and most common form of pool decking
  2. Composite decking – wood-plastic blends that look like timber but require far less maintenance, resist rot, fading, and splinters
  3. PVC or vinyl decking – fully synthetic and highly water-resistant
  4. Aluminium decking – modern, low-maintenance option

How to Choose Pool Decking Materials

It is extremely important that the right materials are used for your pool project – materials that are durable, attractive, and not too hard on your pocket. The timber used for your pool deck needs to be properly prepared so as to avoid any peeling and blistering that could occur in the future. Pool decking boards should be treated and coated before they are laid otherwise, it is not possible to ensure that the boards are completely coated.

If you use the right materials and hire skilled pool decking builders, you should obtain a deck that you can be proud of, and most importantly, will last. When considering which materials should be used for your pool decking and the design of your deck, you need to keep the following in mind:-

Your Pool Deck Should Be:

  • Non-slippery, even when wet.
  • Comfortable for barefoot use.
  • Able to withstand heat and resist absorption of that heat so the deck does not become too hot to stand on.
  • Long lasting and blend into the surrounding landscape.
  • Safe and functional.
  • Treated and sealed properly so as to ensure that chlorine spills don’t bleach your deck.
  • Built using stainless steel nails or screws to prevent rust from forming.
  • Built to Australian Standards and include an approved pool fencing and gate with correct child safety latch.

What are the Advantages of Pool Decking?

  1. If you have the space, a pool deck can provide an area for sitting, reclining or entertaining, and somewhere comfortable to watch the children while they are swimming.
  2. A pool deck helps keep your pool clean as you substantially reduce the amount of dirt and grass you transfer from your feet into the pool.
  3. A good quality pool deck can also increase the value of your home when it comes time for you to sell your property.

What are the Advantages of Timber Pool Decking?

  • Timber is highly versatile and can be easily cut, shaped, and customised to follow the curves of your pool, create multiple levels, or incorporate built-in seating and steps for a perfectly tailored design.
  • Timber pool decking tends to stay cooler underfoot than many hard surfaces or darker composite materials, making it far more comfortable for barefoot walking and playing around the pool during hot Queensland summers.
  • Wooden decks are more flexible than other types of pool surrounds and is thus more child friendly in the event of a fall.
  • A well designed timber pool deck will take into account the pool surrounds and ensure that your deck compliments the environment, leaving you with a natural extension to your back garden.
  • A really great wooden pool deck can include a wooden pergola area near the pool for sun protection and further enjoyment of the outdoor lifestyle.
  • If the shape of your pool allows, with a timber pool deck you could also have a wooden bridge built over the pool.
  • The colour and warmth of a pool deck complements and adds to the blue hues of your pool or pool and spa enhancing the appeal of the entire outdoor area.
  • The gaps between boards on your timber pool deck allow for drainage of water, protecting your deck boards by ensuring that puddles don’t form and reducing the slipping hazard created by water puddles.
  • The natural textured surface of quality hardwood provides excellent grip when wet, delivering reliable slip resistance that helps keep everyone safer around the water.
  • A well-built timber deck acts as a natural barrier that helps keep dirt, grass, and debris out of your pool, meaning less time spent cleaning and more time enjoying the water.
  • When constructed with premium Australian hardwoods and proper detailing, a timber pool deck can significantly increase the overall value and appeal of your home, creating a desirable outdoor living space that future buyers will love.

Alternative Pool Decking Materials

While traditional timber decking is a popular choice for its natural warmth and flexibility, homeowners now have access to several low-maintenance alternatives that perform exceptionally well in the wet, chlorine-heavy environment of a pool surround. These options still deliver the raised, board-style structure that defines true “decking,” but they address common timber concerns such as regular oiling, splinters, and potential rot. Below, we explore three popular alternatives: composite, PVC/vinyl, and aluminium decking.

Note: at DeKing Decks we only install timber and composite decking.

Composite Decking for Pool Surrounds

Composite decking is a wood-plastic blend (often made from recycled wood fibres and plastic) engineered to look and feel remarkably like timber while offering far less upkeep. It resists rot, fading, mould, and splinters extremely well. Many composite boards feature a protective outer cap that enhances UV and stain resistance, and they come in a wide range of realistic wood-grain colours and textures.

Key advantages for pool areas include – excellent slip resistance when wet, no need for annual oiling or sealing, and a splinter-free surface that’s gentler on bare feet and safer for children. It drains effectively through the gaps like timber but won’t warp or cup as easily. While the upfront cost is typically higher than timber, the long-term savings in maintenance and its 25+ year lifespan often make it a smart investment for busy Queensland families.

PVC or Vinyl Decking

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or vinyl decking is a fully synthetic, 100% plastic option that excels in high-moisture environments. Because it contains no wood fibres at all, it is completely waterproof and highly resistant to rot, mould, mildew, and swelling — even with frequent splashing or pool chemical contact.

This makes PVC particularly suitable for pool decks where water constantly sits on the surface. It is lightweight, easy to clean with just a hose, and offers good slip resistance in many textured finishes. Like composite, it requires virtually no ongoing maintenance, such as sanding or sealing.

Potential considerations include a more uniform, less “natural” appearance compared to timber or composite, and it can feel warmer underfoot in direct sun (though some modern PVC products are designed to mitigate heat retention).

Aluminium Decking

Aluminium decking is a sleek, modern metal option that provides outstanding strength and longevity with almost zero maintenance. Powder-coated aluminium boards are corrosion-resistant, non-combustible, and completely immune to rot, warping, splintering, or termite damage — making them highly suitable for poolside use, coastal homes, or bushfire-prone areas.

Many aluminium systems achieve excellent slip ratings (often P4 or P5), which is crucial for wet pool surrounds, and the material stays structurally stable even in extreme heat or humidity. It is lightweight yet very strong, and the deck can be designed to be fully waterproof underneath in some systems.

While it has a contemporary rather than rustic look, the clean lines and durability appeal to those wanting a low-maintenance, long-lasting solution (often 40+ years). Initial cost is higher, but there is no need for sealing, oiling, or frequent inspections.

Pool Decking Design

Every pool is different, and you need to ensure that you obtain the right pool deck design for the material you are using to ensure that it is functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Design challenges for pool decks can include sloping blocks and unusual pool shapes.

Can I Lay Decking Upside Down?

Pool Decking Warning

Many people think that by laying the decking boards upside down (ridged side up) they are creating a better non-slip surface. However, it is strongly recommended that you don’t fall into this trap. When a deck is constructed using boards upside down, it does in fact, become more slippery as algae grows in the water trapped between the grooves. This then becomes a safety hazard and also means that your deck can be susceptible to rot as the water cannot escape and the boards don’t dry out as quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need building approval or pool safety certification for new pool decking in Brisbane?

Yes, adding or modifying decking around an existing or new in-ground pool usually requires approval in Brisbane. A professional builder like DeKing Decks can manage the approvals process and ensure everything complies from the start.

2. Should I choose hardwood or treated pine for my pool decking?

Hardwood offers excellent durability and natural beauty in Queensland’s climate, while treated pine is often more budget-friendly and still performs well when properly detailed.

3. Can I install pool decking around an above-ground pool?

Yes, decking can be designed to wrap around or create a platform for above-ground pools, making them safer and more integrated with your backyard. Proper planning is needed to ensure stable support, correct heights for easy access, and good drainage to handle splash water effectively.
