Deck Insulation and Patio Roofing Insulation

Have you ever walked onto a deck in Summer time, to enjoy the summer breeze and shade, only to find the deck is hotter than any other place in the house? This deck does not have deck insulation.

Just like you insulate the inside of your home, to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter, you can also install deck insulation – which offers similar benefits to indoor insulation. After all, just because your deck offers outdoor entertaining does not mean you should have to suffer from outdoor temperatures, no matter the time of year.

Deck Insulation: How it works

So, what is Insulation? Simply put, the purpose of insulation is to reduce heat from coming in, when outside temperatures are hot, and trapping heat when outside temperatures are cold. Because some materials conduct (transfer) heat better than others you can choose materials that are poor conductors of heat, meaning they trap heat from going in between them. These materials are what we are referring to when we talk about insulation.  Insulation is usually installed inside the roof and/or wall cavities of a home, but these can also be used in decks walls or roofing as well.

During summer, heat from the sun radiates onto a decks roof and walls. Without deck insulation this heat is absorbed by the roof and transferred through the roof, into the space below the roof – effectively the entertainment area. This is why a deck can be shady, but extremely hot during summer. When insulation is installed, the suns heat radiates onto the roof, but rather than be absorbed into the space below, the insulation, being a poor conductor of heat, reduces the amount that is absorbed into the entertainment space below.

During winter the reverse occurs. You may generate heat under the deck, using an outdoor heater such as a patio heater for example. However, because heat rises, this heat quickly escapes through the deck roof, if deck insulation is not installed. When deck insulation is installed the heat generated gets trapped under the deck and heats up the space more effectively.

So, in a very brief summary that’s how deck insulation works to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.

There are a number of insulation options available for you to consider. Depending on whether your deck is being built from scratch or whether it’s an existing deck will determine the types of insulation available to you. Generally, if you are looking to build a new deck, now is the time to install deck insulation – as it will generally be cheaper for you in the long run.

Types of Deck Insulation and Patio Roof Insulation

There are many types of insulation available based on your needs. Common insulation materials include glass wool, polyester, wool and even polystyrene. These stop heat transfer through tiny gaps of air in the material itself. Alternatively, reflective materials such as aluminium can be used to reflect heat away from the deck. The material you choose will depend on whether you are building new or have an existing deck, whether you want to consider recycled or natural materials and whether you are looking to for weather control in both summer and winter or just summer or just winter.
