Top 5 considerations when choosing which type of deck to add to your home
1. Pool Decking
The pool deck is the area adjacent to the swimming pool. The pool deck accommodates lounge chairs, banana lounges, chairs, tables and other backyard and pool furniture. The pool deck is the feel of the swimming zone and creates the style and look of the area. It is a fantastic space to relax around the pool.
2. High Set Deck
A high set deck (also known as an elevated deck) is a raised deck (not on the ground floor of the home). It is a great outdoor entertaining option that extends the indoor space of your home. This additional space allows you to move the relaxation or entertainment outside to enjoy the scenic views and fresh air, and make the most of our beautiful Queensland climate.

This can be on one level or multiple levels, and can have curved rather than square edges to complement the nature that the deck is framing. Australian native hardwoods like spotted gum and merbau are dense, hard-wearing, and resistant to our harsh sun, although they require regular oiling to maintain their rich colour.
Composite decking is a fantastic choice if you want to avoid sanding, oiling, and staining. It is highly resistant to moisture, won’t splinter, and handles fading well.
If the drop from your deck is more than 1 metre, you must install a balustrade that is at least 1 metre high with gaps no wider than 12.5 cm. Additional standards may be in place if the deck is for a pool.
Because of the harsh UV rays and heavy summer rain, you should generally clean and oil your timber deck every 6 to 12 months, or at least every 1-2 years depending on the wood type and sun exposure.
